CANBERRA, Aug 19 AAP - Exports of Australian produce increased by four per cent to $84.3
billion in 1998, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said today.

The Department's annual report on primary and manufactured exports said primary products
continued to dominate Australian exports, accounting for 58 per cent, or $49.1 billion, of
merchandise exports last year, down from 68 per cent 10 years ago.

Exports of primary products dropped one per cent in 1998.

Exports of unprocessed primary products were unchanged at $32.6 billion but processed
primary products fell four per cent to $16.5 billion.

The report highlighted the growing role in exports of manufactured goods, even though these
fell two per cent last year to $24 billion.

Manufactures comprised 28 per cent ($24 billion) of merchandise exports, up from 22 per
cent a decade ago.
